Emergency & Urgent Treatment in Bangkok

If you’re seriously injured or in danger, the priority is fast, capable care and not worry about the bill yet. Thailand has both public and private emergency facilities, but there are real differences in speed, language support, cost, and insurance handling.
First: Call for Help
1669 — National Ambulance & Emergency Services (Thai EMS)
1646 — Bangkok EMS (often faster within the city)
If you can safely get to a hospital yourself, then do so. Ambulances can be slower and sometimes charge a fee if it’s not a true life-threatening emergency.
*** Always call your insurer first if you can ***
Which Hospital should I go to?
*** If this is life-threatening, go to the nearest capable hospital immediately. Financial questions can be sorted after you are stable. ***
I can afford a large upfront deposit or I’m confident my insurance covers top-tier private hospitals
These hospitals provide the fastest, most internationally-oriented emergency care in Bangkok. However, expect high costs without confirmed insurance coverage.
Emergency Department Bumrungrad International Hospital – Part of Bumrungrad International Hospital. One of Bangkok’s most internationally recognised facilities, with broad insurer acceptance and strong specialist teams.
Bangkok Hospital – Large private network with a well-equipped trauma & emergency centre that many travel and international health plans accept.
Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital – Excellent English support and international insurance handling; good for adults and children alike.
Vejthani Hospital – Highly rated private hospital with comprehensive emergency, surgical, and specialist services.
With proper international coverage, many of these hospitals can organize direct billing with your provider or at least streamline reimbursement paperwork.
I am unsure if my insurance covers top-tier private hospitals – mid range options
If you have local Thai insurance (e.g., social security, Thai private plans) or mid-tier coverage, these still provide solid emergency care, often at lower cost than top international hospitals.
Bangkok International Hospital (Brain x Bone) – Quality emergency services with a slightly more affordable price range than big international chains.
BNH Hospital – Good option for general medical emergencies and specialist follow-ups.
MedPark Hospital
Sukumvit Hospital
Vimut Hospital
Smaller private hospitals that still provide capable emergency treatment, often at lower pricing than the premium facilities.
I don’t have any insurance coverage – cheaper options and public hospitals
Public hospitals do have emergency departments, and in a true life-threat situation they are required to help anyone. However:
- Wait times can be long (hours in non-urgent cases).
- Language support varies, so bring a Thai speaker if possible.
- Foreigners usually pay higher fees than Thai citizens.
- Here are the best options in Bangkok…

General Illness & Everyday Medical Issues

Here’s a practical list of hospitals in Bangkok you can visit for general illness and everyday medical issues, ordered roughly from most expensive to cheapest based on typical cost patterns for general consultations and outpatient visits (private vs. public pricing) — not an exact price list but a cost-tier guide you can use when deciding where to go.
In Thailand, private hospitals are significantly more expensive than public ones, and within private hospitals there are tiers from premium to more affordable. Consultations and basic outpatient care vary widely, and public hospitals are typically cheapest but may have longer wait times and basic facilities.
Most Expensive (Premium Private Hospitals)
These are known for international standards, English-friendly service, shorter wait times, and comprehensive amenities — but you’ll pay more for consultations, diagnostics, and treatment.
Bangkok Hospital – One of Bangkok’s largest private hospitals; comprehensive specialist services, higher cost.
Bumrungrad International Hospital – Very well-known international hospital with premium pricing and extensive services.
In this tier, a simple GP visit can cost from ~₿1,500–2,500 + and diagnostics/procedures are on the higher side.
Mid-Range Private Hospitals
These still offer excellent private care, often at somewhat lower cost than top tier but with good English support and services.
Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital – Highly regarded private hospital with broad services.
Samitivej Thonburi Hospital – Slightly more community-oriented Samitivej branch.
Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital – Good regional private option.
Samitivej Chinatown Hospital – Another private alternative in the city.
BNH Hospital – Classic expatriate-friendly private hospital.
Phyathai 1 Hospital – Part of a network of private hospitals, usually less costly than premium tier.
In this range, outpatient consults typically run ~₿1,000–2,000 or more, depending on your issue and whether you see a specialist.
More Affordable / Government & University Hospitals
These are public or university-affiliated hospitals — usually the cheapest option for general illness and everyday medical care. They’re not usually marketed toward tourists, so English support may be limited, but care quality is good — especially for routine issues.
Siriraj Hospital – Major government teaching hospital; low-cost consultations for everyday illnesses (longer waits common).
Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital – Connected to Siriraj; may offer more private-like services but still affordable.
Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University / Ramathibodi Hospital – Public teaching hospital with low-cost outpatient care.
BMA General Hospital – Government hospital under Bangkok Metropolitan Administration with some of the lowest consultation rates.
Public hospital visits for basic outpatient care are typically far cheaper than private — sometimes only a small fraction (e.g., ₿300–₿800) compared with private consult prices.
